Journal Entry 7 –Debate Experience in Listening and Speaking class

At the end of this semester, I have finished two English debates in Viphavee’s Listening and Speaking class. It is marvelous that all of my classmates did a good job, making me learn a lot from them. Did I improve my English listening and speaking skills, learning more abilities such as critical thinking, justifiable arguing, factual evidencing, being deeply knowledgeable, logical and educated person? Let me make some self-examination.

First of all, I would like to talk about my preparing of my debates. To be honest, preparing for a debate really takes me a lot of time, but through the process of searching information, I learned informative knowledge and enjoyed it a lot as well. For the reason that in a debate, there are two different teams speaking against, I had two partners as a team. Due to both of them are sophomores, the discussions among us really help me. Furthermore, I also asked some friends who are good at debating, having debate experience for help. Besides, I really appreciate people who did me a flavor, including my sweet partners and friends. There are also some videos that teacher shared with us, one is lecture about learning debate and the other one is real practice about debate. Trying to listen to what they said, I repeat the words again and again. They help me to understand what Asian Parliament English Debate format will be, how the arguments and proofs can be organized, and most important of all, seeing the real debate competition to have a chance to broad my eyes, experiencing the debate atmospheres.

Standing on the stage is one of my big problems. I find that I get nervous easily on the stage, being afraid of losing some words I anticipate to say. In the first time of my debate, I try to get rid of my draft and give myself a lot of confident, trying to do my best on the stage. However, what I present is pretty terrible with a number of utterances. Even the simple word, I still go blank in my brain. Therefore, for the second debate, I consider whether draft is necessary for me or not. At last, I decide to bring my draft on the stage. With the draft, I rely on it a lot, reading them to the audience. I am now still keeping thinking that whether my decision which allows me to bring my draft on the stage is a good idea or not.

For these two times of debate, I experience the interesting but difficult skills of debating. Through these challenges, I think that I improve a little bit with my public-speaking ability. Let me tell you a secret, that is, when I listen to my own speeches which teacher took when we were debating, I find I was so ridiculous that speaking like a fly. Ha!

Journal Entry 6 - Summary: Nonverbal Behavior: Some Intricate and Diverse Dimensions in Intercultural Communication

John Smith, who has just returned to New York from a vacation in Puerto Rico, had a bad experience about being greeted without order of priority in the largest department in the capital. Are people in there really not organized, as John said?
In fact, John’s occurrence is a vivid example of a communication breakdown due to a misunderstanding and unawareness of the culture nonverbal behavior patterns. In John’s case, he could not “speak” the nonverbal language of Puerto Rico, even though he had the language ability of Spanish; he misunderstood the Puerto Rico culture’s perception of time: polychromic concept of time which is totally different from North American culture: Time is structured in monochromic segments.
Person’s business or social behavior neither is inefficient nor intended to irritate others, but simply owing to the different culture structuring and distinct meanings of time in intercultural communications.

52

There was a man, who had so great a bravery to be the first pioneer of joining the minor league, and fighted for the tiny possibility of advancing to Major League Baseball. However, he was unlucky. Every factor seemed to block his path to M.L.B. After seven years struggle in America, he returned to Taiwan and joined C.P.B.L. (Chinese Professional Baseball League) in 2006. But, instead of being admired for his experience in America, what made him have the high status as a god in the heart of baseball fans in Taiwan is his amazing performence in many international games. Everytime, he used homerun to tell the fans in Taiwan: No matter how great our opponent team was, and how difficult it was to win the game, if we never gave up, there was always possibilities. The man's name, is C.C.F, Chen Chin-Feng.
I still cannot tell clearly about the reason why I always feel moved when thinking of his performence in the past. I like to search his homerun video on the internet when I meet obstacles in my daily life. Feeling the nervous atmosphere in the ball game, looking the little white ball flying out from the home base and then falling on the ground outside the field, listening the crowds' shouting, I can re-experience his glorious time over and over again. It gives me strength and recover the energy to have faith in life. Really, it does work everytime. I'm not a person who is easy to cry, but through watching his homerun video and those music videos which are made for him, I usually have tears in my eyes. And then I realized, they are not only the thing which is called "homerun" in baseball, they are images of the swinging of life strength.
Now he is 31 years old, which is the golden age of a power batter like him. I hope he can still play in the field for another ten years, or even more. If the day of his retire finally come, I think I will never forget the spirit inside the number 52, which I always see on that reliable back.
He is Chen Chin-Feng, the hero in my deep heart.

(This the best music video made for him I have ever seen on the internet!)

I'm lovin it!!

I consider that McDonald is my truly friend. When I feel anxiety or have pressure,I can always find pleasure in McDonald. After a great meal, all the bad feelings disappear and I become alive again!
Last Sunday, because of so many trifles and coming exams which make me so busy,I felt great anxiety. With my request,my friend and I went to McDonald for lunch.Once walking into the restaurant, the familiar smell and atmosphere instantly make me feeling better.
With impulse just as the picture shown,we only two ordered two hamburgers, with fried fries and drinks.Along with twenty pieces of chicken, two ice cream and one corn soup!
Not only us but the clerk felt astonished about our order for that it seemed to for about four to five portions!

Feeling excited with a little bit embarassed,we spent almost one hour to finish this big meal!
So happy!
I think everyone has his or her favorite thing to sooth the tension. No matter is a person or food,we all hope to conquer the bad things and have happier life!
McDonald,I'm lovin it!
Wish everybody has a good performance on exams and a wonderful summer vacation!

Journal Entry6

Several days ago, I found a piece of news which is about Native Americans. In this news, the author tells us that Native Americans have one-sided portrayals in Hollywood for a long time, including such stereotypical characters as the war-whooping savage or the grunting tribesman, and many Native American people are trying to write their own scripts now.
The news takes two people who are both Indian people and artists for example. One is Charlie Hill. He is a comedian. He says that a TV stereotype still stands out in Hill's mind. Like the show The Lone Ranger in 1950s, there was an Indian character Tonto in the show, and to Hill, Tonto belonged to no tribal nation, was "just a generic Indian that was created by the white man." And Hill says that they are indoctrinated that they don't know better. When people think about Indians, they always think about Tonto who was just “Ugh, me not know”. When Hill became comedian, people also liked to make him do like Tonto and wear traditional Indian clothes.
Another person is Elaine Miles. She played on the 1990s TV show Northern Exposure. She says she idolized the Mazola girl who has magical power, just like a stereotype about Native American spirituality like New Age drum circles, power crystals and silken dream catchers. Through her character Marilyn, Miles hopes she has represented herself and her culture well to future generations. Miles says she wants more roles that counter stereotypes of Indians.
But maybe Hill tells the truth, he says he would be out of work if all misperceptions of native people disappeared.

When I read this news, I think of the aboriginal Taiwanese. When it comes to aboriginal Taiwanese, people usually think that they are good at singing and sport, cheerful but thoughtless, like to drink and not suit to the job which asks more knowledge or higher education. We knows lots of good singers and athletes who are aboriginal Taiwanese and take this thing for granted, but if there was a aboriginal Taiwanese who won the math competition, people would think that it was surprised.
People also associate aboriginal Taiwanese with their traditional clothes, houses and handicrafts, so when we come to some tribes, we can see those native Taiwanese in their traditional clothes, making a performance and selling some special handicrafts. They do these things, keep an appearance that their life never change to save their culture and, I think, to make money for their livelihood.
Sometimes people have pity for those aboriginal Taiwanese and think that we should break those stereotypes. It is true that some of those stereotypes are ridiculous and they make aboriginal Taiwanese get limitation and trouble when they find the job. However, just like Hill says that he would be out of work if all misperceptions of aboriginal people disappeared, some aboriginal Taiwanese earn a living by those stereotypes. Some tribes were demanded to keep their tradition house intact, even though many of them live the life just like us. It is such a strange thing. Maybe when people(including aboriginal Taiwanese) say that everyone should break those stereotypes, we should consider this contradictory situation.

[Journal 7 :Summary] Nonverbal Behavior: Some Intricate and Diverse Dimensions in Intercultural Communication

John Smith took a vacation to Puerto Rico, he can communicate with the people there. But he had a bad experience about the misunderstanding of cultural difference, he is angry about the salesman who greeted him then later ignored him in the store after John Smith politely told him to help the people he was already serving. Actually there is a communication breakdown due to a misunderstanding and unawareness of the cultural nonverbal cues. Although John can speak Spanish when he visit Puerto Rico, he cannot "speak" the nonverbal laguage of Puerto Rico. He misunderstood the Puerto Rican culture's preception of time. John Smith met a polychronic concept of time in Puerto Rico, where the salesman tried to serve all customers at the same time, instead of a monochronic pattern in North America. According to this, John Smith would felt he had done his duty and was polite enough, but ended up being ignored by the salesman. The salesman's behavior reflects a polychronic concept of time where communication at several different levels happens at the same time. It's simply a different cultural structuring and meaning of time in communication.

Journal Entry 7 - The Freshman Year in Tsing Hua

When time goes by, I feel something will be different in the campus. I’d like to take down those beautiful memories in the past year, people who are going to leave and the upcoming things.

I joined the tennis club. Most members there major in computer science. Their temperaments are very kind and easy-going. While I was playing tennis, I can hardly remember the bad spirits. The time stayed in the court is always full of happiness. Next academic year, I will be the senior in the club. All I want is to sharpen my skills. Joining a sportive club is the only thing conformed with my anticipation when I was a senior high student.

As for studying, I still cannot find an effective way to study. I’m quite anxious about that but don’t know how to do. What I worried the most is the pouring activities that make me hard to focus on my study. Besides that, instead of seeking for the easy liberal education courses, I was fascinated by some interesting courses. Because I think my life was flavored with those classes I took. Though they are not that important compare with my major, I still make my every effort to those classes. That means I have to spend more time on it, not to mention that I also want to take a program in the future. There’s so many ideas swirl in my mind. I wish I could try my best on everything!

During this academic year, I meet many teachers, seniors and friends. I’m getting more used to this environment. Some of them are going to leave, and I will be the senior in this school. It a pity that I have not yet be familiar with some of those who won’t stay with me. All that I have to do is seize the day and cherish everyone by my side. I wonder why I think of these sensitive things. Maybe there’s too much clues recently to make me aware of the past year.

Kris Allen

I would like to introduce Kris Allen, who won the first place in the season eight of American idol. He is praised as a versatile musician who can not only writing songs but also play many kinds of instrument including acoustic and electric guitar, piano and keyboard, ukulele(a kind of instrument in Hawaii),and viola. But what makes him become the winner of competition is his natural and sincere singing style which successfully penetrates into people’s heart. If one had to try, they might say his music is a mix of acoustic, soul, and pop, but then they would also have to mention the blues undertones and quick moving rhythms of some of his songs.

However, at first, he didn’t receive positive comments from the judges. However, when he put his guitar behind and sang the song “to make you feel me my love”, all the audiences and judges were amazed by his excellent performance because he proved to everyone that his performance without any instrument at hand could still be very attractive and impressive.

Every so often someone comes along with a style of music that cannot be classified or labeled as one particular thing. The style is so their own that it's impossible to place it in just one group. Kris Allen is one of these musicians. Not only is his style unique, but his strength is live performance where he entertains crowds with his powerful voice and his own personal take on a wide variety of favorites.

Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death

The psychiatrist Dr. RedfordB. Williams believes that people who are angry and cynical are five times as likely to die under the age of 50 as people who are calm and trusting. The result is different from many researches which claim that people who work too hard and always in hurry are more likely to suffer heart attack than those relaxed man. His theory is based on the experiment in the 25-years research of 118 lawyers. Those who received high scores on hostility traits were five times as like to die before 50 as classmates who were not hostile.

Moreover, the weakness of nervous system and the level of adrenaline make people lose their temper easily, and even express their rage in action in the daily life.
Therefore, hostile people cannot calm down their anger as soon as nonhostile people do. In addition, the extremely bad mood will lead to high blood pressure which damages the heart and blood vessels. So William claims that trusting people will live longer than cynics.

Violent Behavior

At the sight of the horrible article which mentions that a filial person was killed by several young strangers without any reasons, it makes me feel extremely angry and take great pity on the victim. Until now, I still have no idea about the killers' motive. Why did they beat an innocent person to death beyond any compassion? Why are they so cruel to treat a harmless man?

The incident took place next Tuesday. The victim and his friend came to 南寮, chatting with each other and feeling breeze at night. Without any offense to strangers, they were attacked by them. Much to my shock, the reason for that kind of violent action just because they thought that the victim offended their eye. What kind of perspective do they have? What happens to our society? They totally distort the values of morality.

For the purpose of avoiding the similar event takes place again, a lot of cyperpals submitted a petition to government authorities, calling upon cracking down illegal car racing and giving citizens a secure environment to live. Because of the action, police officers put much stress on this case and they arrested criminals as soon as possible.

Although the cruel criminals got arrested in a short time; however, the permanent hurt has already caused.

As for me, to be honest, today, the values of morality has been damaged a lot. I have no confidence to say that the same incident won't occur again, but I consider that submitting a petition to government authorities like one person, one letter, is a good way to express our anger. And it's a peaceful way to have authorities take notice of our need of security.

Summary: Nonverbal Behavior

John Smith understood and spoke Spanish. He thought that the spanish were not organized and so was their business behavior. John Smith took his experience for example. He noticed that people in Spain did not have any sense of order or business. Owing to misunderstanding, their communication broke down. This experience proved that John Smith could not "speak" the nonverbal language. He misunderstood the Spain culture's perception of time. He expecteda monochronic pattern of communication; however, he met a polychronic concept of time. John Smith acted according to his North American cultural expection.
The same behavior can be observed any places .The event just reflects a different structuring and meaning of time in communication.

Journal Entry 6 - Summary : Nonverbal Behavior:Some Intricate and Diverse Dimensions in Intercultural Communication

John Smith returned to New York from a vacation from Puerto Rico. He told his friends he can communicate with people over there but he assumed that the people and the business behavior there are not organized. He took his experience at a department store in San Juan, the capital as an example. The sales man didn't served his customers in order that made John Smith quite angry.

It shows a communication breakdown in this event. Though John Smith can speak Spanish, he doesn't understand and notice the nonverbal cultural cues. He met a polychronic concept of time when he expected a monochronic pattern of communication.

This kind of scene happens anywhere monochronic and polychronic concept of time meet. It's just a different cultural structuring and meaning of time in communication.

Japanese enterprise culture [7]

Last Sunday I read a book "艾蜜莉的日本求生記". It's author, Amelie Nothomb, is a Belgian female writer who was born in Japan and lived there in her childhood. She believed that she must have been a Japanese and her dream was to work for a Japan enterprise. She was so excited that her dream finally came true in Tokyo.

Nevertheless, the first day she came to the company she found that everything was beyond her expectation. In Japan, the status of woman is very low not to mention the fact that Amelie is a "foreign woman". Japanese women are supposed to obey men. Besides, the boss are usually men. Women have little chances to be promoted.

Therefore, in her workplace Amelie had no friends. The only female was her boss. She was afraid that Amelie might be promoted so she always picked on Amelie. She tried to humiliate Amelie by hook or crook. Amelie thought she was employed as an interpreter but her boss didn't give her any work to do. Finally, she was sent to serve the tea to guests, but she got into trouble because she could speak Japanese so well! The clients was not comfortable for there was a foreigner who could understand them. After that, Amelie was forbidden to speak and understand Japanese.

Amelie thought everything was ridiculous but she didn't escape. Her last work in that company was cleaning the restroom. She always worked optimistically. When her contract expired, she quited the job and went back to Belgium. Now she is a writer and awarded.

Through this book, we can see Japanese culture of enterprise, so ridiculous but also so aspiring. Still, I appreciate that I am not a Japanese girl. I may love Japanese culture very much. I mean their food, their scenery, their concept of environmental protection and so on. But I don't want to be a Japanese. As a woman, life in Japan is so hard. Men and women are still not equivalent seriously even today.

summary of "Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death" [6]

There are two type of men identified by cardiologists. "Type A" people are under stress and work too hard. Conversely, "Type B" men are relaxed. According to the cardiologists, Type A people were twice as likely to suffer heart disease as Type B men. However, a psychiatrist named Dr. Redford B. Williams has found that people who are angry and cynical are five times as likely to die under the age of 50 as people who are calm and trusting. Williams said that of all the aspects that make up Type A pattern, only those related to hostility and anger really lead to heart problems. Hostile and nonhostile people seem to have different nervous system. When hostile people become upset or get annoyed, they have larger rises in blood pressure than nonhostile people. This gives rise to damage of the heart and blood vessels. Therefore, Williams stated, "There is no evidence that the Type A personality is likely to die young. But there is lots of evidence that people who are hostile and angry do."

[Journal 6] It's Hard to Say Good-bye.

As the end of this semester approches, my mind and heart turn to be much more anxious and depressed than before. It's not because of the bombing of final exams, it's because the leaving of seniors. I am a christian so that I attend the religious group and go to church every week. Accroding to this good relationship with the people who are also attend the religious gruop and church, we are just like a big family and we help each other when someone is in his/ her difficulties. Although I've only studied here for one year, the seniors are always set a model for us and also make me feel at ease. When I am down, they comfort me; When I am confused, they give me suggestion; When I am happy, they listen to my sharing. We held two farewell parties for them last week, and most of us cried in the parties. It's hard to imagine the life without them and the life we should depend on ourselves.

The seniors in Tsing-Hua are also my beloved one. We met them almost in the volleyball team. we've practiced and played competitions together, we went to Taipei and Pingtung together and we've tasted the flavor of sweat together as well.

Graduating seems to be a beginning for graduates, but it's about departing and seperating for undergraduates. It's always hard for me to say good-bye, I think I am a emotional person but also the one who pretend that nothing happens. I hope every senior can start their new journey smoothly and happily. Congratulation for graduation!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The best movie you have ever seen yet in this summer is definitely Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The latest series movie of this year! It will be released on 6.23.2009. Transformers is adapted from the cartoon Transformers franchise. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It is still directed by Micheal Bay and stares by Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox as the first series movie Transformers.

The story talks about a war between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. They are able to change themselves into a variety of objects, including cars, trucks, planes and other technological creations. The Decepticons yearn to take control of the All Spark, the object that created their robotic world. They also intend to use it to build an army.

1. Sam Witwicky starred by Shia LaBeouf, a boy involved in the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. He persuades his father to buy a second-car for him and then he find that his car is actually a member of the Autobot, Bumblebee.

2. Mikaela Banes starred by Megan Fox, a girl who Sam Witwicky secretly has a crush on. Her father is a car thief. Because of her father, Mikaela Banes has learned some technique of car stealing.

3. Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots.

4. Bumblebee. To avoid Megatron to get the All Spark, Bumblebee throw the All Spark to the outer space. Bumblebee also loses the ability to speak and temporarily uses broadcasting to express.

5. Megatron, the leader of the Deceptions. Megatron came to the earth for All Spark. But, Megatron fell into the North Pole by accident.

I have to admit that I have never watched the cartoon Transformers franchise. I also didn’t go to the theater to see the first movie Transformers. Transformers was released on 2007. And, I could remember at that time. I had no interests with that movie. The Chinese title ‘’變形金剛’’ could not attract my attention. Girls do not love something like 金剛. But, one day, I found that it was showing on the TV. I was immediately attracted by it. If you want to relax and enjoy the sound editing, sound mixing and the visual effects. You must go to the theater and enjoy this movie!

Go to A Doctor or Not

This is the second time that I gets a cold in this semester. I get a cold before the exam each time. It's so unlucky.
Cough, running nose and stuffy nose make me very uncomfortable and feel tired easily. My mom always tell me to go to a doctor when I get a cold. I did go to a doctor last time but I didn't go this time.
Why?
First, nobody likes to go to a doctor and takes medicines. Neither do I. Second, I knows that virus causes cold. Medicines which the doctor gives us can ease the symptoms of cold but it can't kill the virus. We feel better and recover from cold because our bodies produce the antibody. Therefore, when we get cold, we should rest a lot to raise the immunity. Third, each medicine has side effect. Taking too much medicine is not good to our health.
Now, I'm fighting against the virus. I hope that I can recover from the cold before all final exams.

Here are some websites about cold & go to a doctor:

The surprising performances of Hugh Jackman

I want to introduce Oscars which was held on February. Although it was held a few months ago, I accidentally found some interesting video clips on the youtube.

As you all know, Academy Awards, you can also name it Oscars, aiming at encouraging the development of movies. It is not only the annual event in America, but also a spotlight in the world.

In recent years, the TV rating has gradually gone down. To reclaim the TV rating, the 81th Academy Awards decides to invite Hugh Jackman as their new host, instead of TV show hosts or comedians traditionally.

Hugh Jackman is an Australian actor. You may surprisingly know that Jackman sings and dances very well! As for me, I was shocked to find that the Wolverine and the hunter in the Van Helsing can actually sing and dance so well! In fact, Jackman hosted the Tony Awards in 2003, 2004, and 2005, garnering very positive reviews. His excellent hosting of the 2004 Tony Awards earned him an Emmy Award win for Outstanding Individual Performer in a Variety, Musical, or Comedy program in 2005.

The following is the performances of Hugh Jackman on the Tony Awards and the Academy Awards.

Summary-Nonverbal Vehavior: Some Intricate and Diverse Dimensions in Intercultural Communication

John Smith worked in Puerto Rico and returned to New York from a vacation. He thought that people there are not organized and gave an example about his experience in the largest department store in San Juan. As soon as he arrived the department store, the salesman greeted him and asked what he could do for him. John thanked the salesman and didn't want to interrupt the other customers. After a while, other people arrived and interrupted so he was furious and waiting for his turn.
People who live in different cultures make this misunderstanding emerge. John Smith can't speak nonverbal language of Puerto Rico. John's North American culture is a monochronic pattern that people are served one at a time and each person si served in the orer of arrival. However, the culture in Puerto Rico is a polychronic concept is opposite. The salesman tried to serve all customers at the same time.

what i have learned as a freshman in Tsing-Hua?

During this year, i had been trough a lot. I was perplexed about how to study in the university in the last semester. I don't know what my goals are, and not knowing what to strive for. I joined two clubs, both of these clubs gave me ideas about what i am going to do in the future. One of my club is taking care of people with Down's Syndrom (唐氏症寶寶) and mental retarted people. By taking care of them, i found that what we think controls what we feel. As long as i think optimistically, i will feel happy and willing to face challenges all the time. The other club i joined is popdance. Not only did i have fun learning dancing, i also learn how to understand people with different thoughts and accept it. Now, when i look back on the days that i feel confused about the future, i felt myself stupid. Living in the present is the most important thing i need to concern. i believe as long as i cherish every challenges i have met and learn something out of it, then my life is not just about idling is about experiences accumulation. i want to live a rapturous life and now i am creating it.

summary--hooked on crime

The largest group of career criminals, a dozen of men and one woman, gather together outside the prison system in Salvation Army in Vancouver, they assemble Crime Addiction Anonymous. The purpose of their weekly gathering is to share the experiences of crime addiction, a illness as tenacious as dependency on alcohol or drugs. The program founder, Mingo, was one of them a year ago. He claims that the program saves his life and named the program '' Harbour Light''. The program goes smoothly is because the program is created by the members not imposed on them. The program adopt the same stratedy as alcohol, nicotine and drug addiction have, 12-step. Yet, somebody thinks ''addiction'' is just another better word to label the bad deeds into a appealing and sexy one. Some members of this program claim that the program is really helpful. Though to have everyone with the addiction change is difficult, yet, with the help of the program, Mingo believes that he can help everyone and tolerant every difficulties he enconters.

Lene Marlin- Faces

This semester is finally at the end. Time flies so fast that I hardly believe I become a sophomore. I still remember when I finish the College Entrance Examination in Specified Subjects, I felt so excited and relaxed. My friends and I went shopping until nine o’clock in order to celebrate that we finally finished the suffering period of having tests every day! But when I looked the answer on newspaper, I felt angry and sad. I was angry at myself for not did well in math exam and I was sad because I did not achieve the expatiation of my teacher, my friends, my mom and myself.then, I become a freshman in FLL in Tsing Hua. This thing I could not expect and believe when I was a senior high school student.

At the beginning of first semester in FLL, I felt a little bit painful to study English and I envied my friends who all study in college of business. So I often felt sad and lonely. One of my friends knew my situation, so she asked me to see her blogger. The article’s title is “for you” and this song just right here. She did not type any words but just lyrics of this song. I cried a lot after I listened to this song. I felt warm, because I knew they all companied beside me, even we study in different colleges.

Hope you will love this song!

Faces

Pour me some wine, join me tonight
Surround me with your happy faces
Share some fun stories, stay up all night
Surround me with your friendly faces
Then look at me, when I'm not aware
Then you'll see, I cannot do without you
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand
Like I know you'd do for me too, like I know
You'd do for me too

Pour me some wine, join me tonight
Life is so good when I'm with you
I needed the laughs, I needed you tonight

So look at me, when I'm not aware
Then you'll see, I cannot do without you
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand
Like I know you'd do for me too.
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand
Like I know you'd do for me too.

Wang Struggles

Wang, Chien-Ming, the ace starting pitcher (王牌先發投手) of New York Yankees, who got 19 wins in a single season for two years continuously and helped the Yankees take the ticket to the playoff (季後賽) in 2006. However, in the beginnig of the season in 2009, Wang got lost in his pitching after recovering from his right foot injury in 2008. With unstable performance, Wang was put into the disabled list(傷兵名單) and stayed in bullpen (牛棚) for adjusting his physical situation.

Fortunately, because Wang's work in relief promises that he was ready to contribute in the rotation (輪值表), he was given a chance to stand on the mound again. However, in the recent game against Bosten Red Sox, Wang fell to 0-4 with the loss and his ERA(Earned Run Average 投手防禦率) dropped ever so slightly from 14.46 to 14.34. Due to be unable to throw balls into the strike zone (好球帶), Wang still can't find his way of pitching. In addition, Wang said, "I haven't thrown a good ballgame in a while. It's definitely frustrating."

Nevertheless, Wang's teammates and his coaches still hold a positive attitude toward Wang's temperory low tide. The catcher, Jorge Posada said, "His mechanics are a little messed up right now. That's all I see. I still trust the guy." Also, manager Joe Girardi said,"I don't think a guy forgets how to pitch overnight."

The Yankees have said that Wang is completely healthy, and his low-90s velocity tells that his arm is strong. But I think there is a flaw that Wang put too much pressure on himself while he was hurry to win. At this moment, what we fans can do is wait for Wang. Well, on June 17th, Wang is going to take on the starting pitcher against Washington Nationals. We all look forward that Wang can prove us "Taiwan Lightning" comes back.

Summary-Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death

Most of the researchers used to believe the Type A theory which concerns “Type A” people, those who work overly and always be under stress, were much likely to die from heart disease than “Type B” people who leaded more relaxed lives. However, the psychiatrist Dr. Redford B. Williams claims that hostility, rather than stress, leads to premature death. In addition, Dr. Williams’ works really disprove the previous hypothesis which cannot be proved by clear evidence even through series studies conducted in early 1980s. Based on Williams’ numerous studies on 118 lawyers, which lasted for 25 years, he finds out that those who received high scores on hostility traits were five times as likely to die before age 50 as classmates who were not hostile. Dr. Williams holds that the nervous system of nonhostile people acts like a “stop switch” to calm them down when they feel angry, however, the one of those hostile people does not works at the same way. The levels of adrenaline in their bodies remain high and the blood pressure rises greatly, which lead to damage of the heart and the blood vessels or even early death.

Summary-Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death

In the past, many researchers believe “Type A” people, who work too hard under stress and always in a hurry, were tend to suffer heart disease than relaxed men; however, there were a series of studies disprove this point. Dr. Williams, who conducted numerous studies on this topic, points out people whose personality traits reflect cynical mistrust, anger, and angry behavior, are more likely to die early. Moreover, hostile people have weaker nervous system than nonhostile people so that hostile people continue feel angry and larger rises in blood pressure. William stated “I think we should abandon the Type A hypothesis, because there is no evidence that Type A personality is likely to die young. But there is a lot of evidence that people who are hostile and angry do.”

Summary: Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death

Some early researches believe "Type A" people, working hard under stress and always in a hurry, are more likely to die under the age of 50 than "Type B" ones, who are calm and trusting. According to a psychiatrist Dr. Redford B. Williams, however, through the experiment on 118 lawyers, a recent research points out that personality traits, such as cynicism, anger and mistrust are the main reasons leading to premature death. Furthermore, hostile and nonhostile people have different nervous systems in fact. For hostile people, they have weaker nervous systems than the nonhostile, which results in getting angry easily and raising blood pressure. As a result, we should abandon the Type A hypothesis because no evidence can prove it. On the other hand, there is lots of evidence that people who are hostile and angry are in the risk of premature death.

summary- Today's lesson: How to Start a Successful Business

There is a new course about the basic principles of entrepreneurship run by Korean Advanced Institute for Science and Technology (KAIST) and named the High Tech Venture Center. The course teaches students that know how to create a product, but, don’t know how to run a company or turn a profit. Hundreds of salarymen who have lost ‘’jobs-for-life’’ are looking for new business opportunities. The center creates new entrepreneurs and presents some examples. First, be more prepared, when making pitch to potential investor. Second, keep a prefect credit record. Third, emphasize that product is breakthrough technology and has worldwide export potential. Fourth, don’t give up.

Park Soo Wong is the new type of entrepreneur. He resisted to take a job with a large corporation and rejected the security and prestige that comes with such employment. Finally, he entered his business plan in a competition plan and won.

The government is promoting start-ups in hopes of encouraging new jobs. Korea is full of opportunity now. So, young talents have to grab their chance.

Reading the Air

Recently, I have read an article about the ability of reading the air in the website of Common Wealth Magazine. According to the article, beginning at 2007, kuuki yome ("read the air") has become the hottest catchphrase in the Japanese new "must-study" subject for businesses, individuals and even politicians. The author says that "reading the Air" does not simply refer to reading people's expressions but the ability which combines the understanding of whole atmosphere and the good communicating and executing of different ideas. Moreover, there are many examples to show the importance of kuuki yome such as the success of Taiwan's biggest convenience store 7-11, and the article also mentions the connection between the ability of kuuki yome and several politicians' different situation.

After reading this article, I not only realized the significance of kuuki yome but also learned some ways to build it up. First, to fully understand the situation, we should confirm who the people are in attendance, including their professional and interpersonal relationships, and your own relationships with them. Second, pay close attention to the overall atmosphere and changes to choose a right time to speak. Third, use suitable and concise language when speaking. Fourth, observe changes in the eyes and expressions of those present.

All in all, to succeed in this constantly changing modern world, we can't just depend on the Internet, remaining cloistered in our own virtual environment and unwilling to go out and communicate with the outside world, which will causes the lack perceptive faculties.

Susan Boyle collapsed!

LONDON - Allies of singing sensation Susan Boyle rallied round Monday as it emerged she was rushed to a London clinic with exhaustion and possible mental health problems soon after a shock talent show defeat.
Boyle, whose frumpy appearance hid a soaring voice which made her a global star, was taken by ambulance to the Priory Clinic in north London Sunday accompanied by paramedics and police after acting strangely at her hotel, The Sun newspaper reported. The news came hot on the heels of her surprise defeat late Saturday in the final of the "Britain's Got Talent" television show, when she was voted into second place by the public behind urban dance troupe Diversity.
Feeling shocked,I searched all her competition vedios and new since she joined the famous TV show,"Britain's Got Talent".Making the comparison between her first and last singing performance, there are total different feeling though she sang the same song I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables. At the beginning, she was a happy woman who dreames to be the most famous singer in England. She showed her optimistim facing the audience's taunts.By her powerful voice, everyone was touched. And she showed her great confidence, fearing nothing. She just wanted to fulfill her dream and life was seemed so beautiful. From her singing, you can see the energy and thus deeply moved.
However, the reality is sometimes so cruel that make people cry.Susan suffered a great pressures after her sudden popular among people all over the world.Peopple looked everything from her.Family, marriage, age and so on.Even her appearance is widely disscussed.Through the last video can see the obvious distinctions between her first performance.
Wearing beautiful dress with thick make-up,you can see the big changes. Her singing techinique also improves a lot.Everything seemed so perfect except one thing:she's not happy.Through the video can observe her fatigue. The happy Susan disappeared, instead, there's a tired woman who suffered extreme pressures for seven weeks. Finally, she collapsed after the competition.
With this example came a heavy thought. Is that really worthwhile? If she can choose again, will she step into the same road?I have no idea.Pursuing fame and money are human nature and commonly think that the more you get,the happier you will be.
Really?
I think that all things need to be paid off.Once you make a decision, you need to have a self-conscious that your life may change beyond your control. But before that decision day coming,be cherish about what you have. That's the most important thing through life. After all,you don't know the future and the change. But you can hold the present!

Her first performance, hope we all can remember our original insistence!!

[Summary]Nonverval Behavior:Some Intricate and Diverse Dimensions in Interculture Communication

John Smith lived in New York and just had a vacation in Puerto Rico where people spoke Spanish. He thought that he was fluent enough talking to the nativepeople but considered people there are not organized. He showed the example about going to the largest department store. The salesman turned to greet him as soon as he walked in while he was serving the other customers.Later John was furious seeing that the salesman was interrupted and he needed to wait for his turn.
This is the misunderstanding because John can't "speak" the nonverbal language of Puerto Rico.John assumes every culture is a monochronic pattern of cummunication while people in Puerto Rico is a polychronic concept of time. From John's perspective, time tasks are completed one at a time and there should be an apology if customers are not served in the order of their arrival. However, from Puerto Rico salesman's aspect,he tried to serve all customers at the same time and thought he had down his duty and was polite. It simply is the different ways people use their time and the misunderstanding is easily to occur when they meet.

Fantastic trip to Mautu Discovery Forest (綠光森林)

Thanks to the four day Dragon Boat Festival holidays, my friend and I planned to take a visit to the Mautu Discovery Forest on Thursday. It was raining when we went out and was not proper to ride the motorcycle. But we prepared for a long time and didn’t want to give up. So we decided to follow our plan unless the weather was not permitted. After about one and half hour tough riding, we finally arrived at the forest. Surprisingly, the weather was so good in the mountain that I needed to put off my coat!
Mautu Discovery Forest is located in an aborigine tribe in Guan-Xi(關西). The word Mautu means the gathering of everything in the tribe’s language. The forest is popularity gained by good reputation because of a famous drama,”Greenlight Elementary”. The constructions in the drama are well-retained and the whole forest then be filled with beautiful fairy tales’ atmosphere. The air in the forest was so fresh that I felt my lung was smiling at me!

There many cute wooden handicrafts along the paths. Watching these cute toys can make you feel relaxed and happy!

Tall trees make the whole forest excellent atmosphere. It seemed that all worries and unhappy things are separated by the dense trees.
----Walking around as you please.----
----Breathing the fresh air.----
----Feeling the vivid nature.----
----Releasing the pressure.-----
I think that life may sometimes have somem difficulities happen in everybody's daily life. When you feel disappointed and feel that you can't endure any more, a short rest is nesserary.A trip like visiting the nature is a wonderful way to settle yourself!

Journal Entry 5---My favorite player

Watching sports games is one of my entertainments and it helps me greatly to relax from pressure of exams during my high school times. All kinds of sports games from basketball to snooker are absorbing to me. It’s really exciting and amusing to watch those games. Among all kinds of games, tennis games interest me most. I started following tennis games when I was thirteen and since then I have had a crush on the famous player, Rafael Nadal, who is the World Number1 now.
Rafael was born on June 3, 1986 on the island of Mallorca (Spain) where he still lives at home with his parents, younger sister and extended family in a large apartment building in downtown Manacor. Unlike many other talented young players Rafael did not have to suffer the stress of leaving home at an early age in order to train at an established tennis academy. His full-time coach since the age of 11 has been his uncle Toni Nadal (a former top 30 Spanish tennis pro) with whom he lives in Manacor; he also credits his friend and mentor, former World Number1 Carlos Moya, with helping his early development when he was a youngster starting out on his career.
Rafael Nadal , at the age of 15 , turned profession in 2001 and won his first professional ATP match at the same year. With continuous training and his great endeavors, Rafael Nadal has been ranked at World Number1 in ATP since August 18, 2008, just seven years after he turned into a professional player. His incredible progress and exceptional endurance amaze the tennis players and also rouse the attention from the press. However, the reason I love him so much is not only because of his wonderful tennis playing skills but also because his nice personality. Though he is one of the best players in the world, he still keeps his sincerity. He’s willing to praise other players and show his modesty no matter he won the game or not. Besides, Rafael never shows off in front of the media even when he got a championship through keen competition. It’s his polite and amiable attitude that attracts me to be his big fan.

[Journal 5] Finals of Susan Boyle in Britains Got Talent

I believe that everyone has heard about the amazing woman whose beautiful voice surprised the whole British and others. Her name is Susan Boyle, a woman who is in her fifties comes from the countryside of Ireland. At the first competition, she was looked down by most of people and nobody believed that this farm woman can sing. But when she sang the famous song which is played in "Les Miserable"--- "I dreamt a dream" on the stage, then came out the loud applaus from all the audience. She sang so beatifully and can also touched people's hearts!
But things won't always go so smoothly. After the first competition in "Britains Got Talent", she has gotton lots of pressure. The pressure comes from the media, the pubic opinions and the people who don't accept her. Since bearing such big pressure for two mounths, Susan Boyle finally got sick.
The point that I admire Susan Boyle is not that she can sing beautifully, it's beacause she never gives up. Although she doesn't completely recover from the sickness now, she still insists to participate in the singing competition till the end. This vedio I paste here is the finals of "Britains Got Talent", and you can see Susan Boyle with a little bit tired appearance that even the heavy makeup couldn't hide it. After all, Susan Boyle didn't gain the champion of this competition, she got the second place. However, she is the champion and good model in my heart.

Summary: "Cynicism and Mistrust Tied to Early Death", page 67

In the past, it was believed that Type A people, people under stress who work too hard and are always in a hurry, were twice as likely to suffer heart disease as relaxed people, but a series of studies conducted in the 1980s failed to prove that there was a connection between Type A personalities and heart problems. A researcher, Dr. William said, "Now we can claim that only those personalities of hostility and anger really lead to heart problems." Dr. William said that hostile and nonhostile people seem to have different nervous system. When nonhostile people become angry, their nervous system acts like a "stop switch" that calms them down. Hostile people, on the other hand, seem to have weak nervous system, which can't calm them down. There are also differences between their blood pressure. Hostile people also have higher blood pressure which is easy to damage the heart and blood vessels. There is no evidence that the Type A personality is likely to die young. But there is lots of evidence that people who are hostile and angry do.

[Journal 4] photos record memories

I just have some chances to sort my photos of traveling recently, and I find out that everytime when I am looking at these photos, I can't help but taking long time to think back to the great memories which are showed on the photos.

I noticed that it also happens to everyone. Photos indeed seem to have some kind of magic power that can attract people's attention and recall the memories of people's minds as well. I went back home this dragon boat festival holidays, at one night I was sitting on the sofa after dinner and looking at the photos which were shot about fourty years ago. I saw my mom in diaper playing with her siblings and my youthful grandparents stood beside them. Then my mom began to tell me the story that happend to her childhood. I love listening to the stories that are told by my parents and grandparents with photos.

Although people's lives move on quickly, we can still store some unforgettable memories by taking pictures. Photos can record memories so that we won't forget the important events that happend in our lives.

insomnia

Recently, i am suffering from insomnia. i cannot sleep until i see the sunlight in the early morning. i went to bed at 12:00 but fall asleep until 5:30. it is really torturing while laying on bed with a blank mind. yet, while lying on bed, memories suddenly stoke into my head.
it is when i was still a kindengarden girl, i hate to go to school. i always made up excuses to convice my mom that i am too ill to go to school the other day, especailly after the weekend. my mom told me that there were once that i used up all the excuses, for example, headache, stomache, toothache etc. i told my mom out of the blue that i got a ''hairache'' ??!! i couldn't help but smell when i was lying in the bed.
although insomnia is torturing, thinking about the old times accidentally brought me some joynesses. i appreciate that.
